The Aboitiz Power group has inaugurated its 300-MW Davao Baseload Power Plant in Binugao, Toril, Davao City on January 8, 2016. The event was graced by His Excellency Benigno Simeon Aquino III, Aboitiz Power Chief Executive Officer Ramon Aboitiz, Davao City Councilor Carlos Bello who came in behalf of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Sta. Cruz Mayor Joel Ray Lopez and Energy Secretary Zenaida Monsada.
A fully-owned subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corporation, Therma South, Inc. is a 2×150-MW thermal power plant located in the boundary of Davao City and Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.
The power plant delivers baseload power to more than 20 electric cooperatives and distribution utilities serving the major cities of Davao, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Butuan, Zamboanga, Kidapawan, Cotabato and Tagum, among others. It also serves the provinces of Davao, Agusan, Surigao, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, Zamboanga Peninsula, parts of Bukidnon, and parts of Misamis.
The power plant started construction in 2012, and its peak employed more than 4,500 workers, many coming from our host communities.
The power plant utilizes Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) technology to ensure it meets government standards on health, safety, and protection of the environment while operating in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Already a landmark and icon in Davao, the coal dome, another special feature of the plant, is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. This modern coal storage facility ensures the security of the fuel, safety, and welfare of the environment.
From the coal jetty, a first-of-its-kind Screw-type ship unloader safely transfers the coal directly from the hatch of the ship to the fully-covered conveyor system which traverses the jetty through the coal dome. This technology helps prevent spillage and ensures proper handling of unloaded coal.
The Electronic Precipitator electrically charges particles coming out of the boiler furnace. This facility ensures that 99 percent of dust and other particles are not released into the atmosphere.
The Continuous Emissions Monitoring System is a round-the-clock real-time monitoring of the emissions of the power plant. The readings are connected to the Environment Management Bureau which makes sure the power plant meets Philippine Clean Air Act standards all the time.
